TFL proposes changes to Shepherds Bush roundabout

Shepherd's Bush Roundabout
Shepherd's Bush Roundabout

TFL are proposing changes to the Shepherd's Bush Roundabout to improve safety and encourage active travel, see their full details here

The roundabout, also sometimes known as Holland Park roundabout, is a key junction in West London, connecting Shepherd’s Bush Green with Holland Park Avenue. TFL’s proposal includes a new two-way protected cycle lane running through the central traffic island, with additional cycle signals, crossings, and a priority bus lane. The scheme forms part of the Mayor’s Safer Junction Programme and aims to reduce collisions and improve pedestrian and cyclist access.

The consultation is live until 3 March 2026

There is considerable local opposition and this is a message is from the apolitical SOS group that is concerned about the changes.

" We are pro-cycling and want to encourage people to cycle by enabling them to do so safely. But our concerns with TfL’s scheme are

  • Encouraging more cyclists into the path of traffic when so many cyclists (c.50%) fail to stop at red lights on this roundabout, which could reduce not increase cycle safety

  • The removal of a traffic lane on Shepherd’s Bush Road, Holland Park Avenue and the roundabout – creating congestion for other traffic including buses and emergency vehicles and pushing traffic into local streets in Brook Green, Addison, Shepherd’s Bush and Hammersmith Grove

We believe that a better way forward is to upgrade the two existing well-used and historically safe cycleways around the roundabout, as it will make cycling safer for all and encourage less experienced cyclists to cycle, without requiring the removal of any traffic lanes. See attached chart for more detail.

Before any final decision is made, we are urging TFL to

  • Undertake local traffic modelling to assess the likely impact on congestion on the roundabout and local residential streets.

  • Map out the alternative proposal in practice, including how it can be segregated for pedestrians and cyclists.

Less than 12% of residents and 30% of cyclists support the scheme but TFL want to push ahead. But TFL can only go ahead if Hammersmith & Fulham Council approves it. So we are

We believe this could have a negative impact on the residents in your area

Thank you, "
