Just before Christmas the Carpenter’s Arms submitted a request for planning permission to carry out improvements to the pub. The current thinking is that, should permission be granted, the work would start in early 2027.
Overall the look and character of the pub will be maintained. The exterior windows will be removed and fully refurbished and the roof replaced. Inside there will be new loos, a slight layout change downstairs and a more substantial one upstairs to make the private dining room more usable and inviting. The full plans will be available on the council website as normal although given the holidays and the recent cyber attack on the council website, this may be slightly delayed.
Jack Greenall, the owner, would like to invite anyone who had any questions or concerns to pop in to see him on January 12th. He’ll be in the pub between 5pm and 7pm and is happy to share his thinking in more detail. His planning consultant will also be there to answer any more technical questions. This will be in addition to the normal consultation process which the council will handle.
Jack commented as follows:
'The Carpenters Arms dates from 1871 and sits at the corner of Black Lion Lane and St Peter’s
Villas. It is a fully functioning public house that offers high-quality modern-British food and quality drinks with a focus on fine ales.
Planning permission is sought for the replacement of the existing rear lean-to and replacement with an infill extension, works to the roof of the rear single-storey extension with new fenestration, removal of first first-floor door to the flat roof and replacement of dormer windows and associated works.
The works are modest in planning terms, but the investment to be made is essential for the future well-being and vitality of the pub and to ensure that the requisite licensing and health & hygiene standards continue to be met.'
