The newly restored Greek Runner

One of the expert restoration team cleaning of the statue and the plinth

Still in the process of cleaning of the statue and the plinth
Cleaning started on the Greek Runner Tuesday 11th November, following the recent approval of the necessary planning permission. It was completed on 26th November. The statue is looking splendid and the fine markings and musculature of the statue are much more visible thanks to the caareful work by the expert restorers, Rupert Harris Conservation.
A celebration of the Greek Runner to mark its 100th anniversary and the restoration is provisionally planned for the May Bank Holiday next year. More details to follow.
Our thanks again to all those who so generously contributed to the fundraising. Full project details below.
ITV Local News covered the story over the summer
In 2026, the Greek Runner statue will celebrate 100 years standing proudly at the centre of St Peter’s Square, Hammersmith. This Grade II listed sculpture is more than just a decorative feature, it is a cherished symbol of the neighbourhood and a piece of local heritage.
Over the decades, weather and time have taken their toll. To mark its centenary the statue will be restored to its original splendour to ensure it can be enjoyed by future generations.
Why It Matters
The Greek Runner has been a familiar and much-loved figure in the Square for nearly a century. It adds character and a sense of continuity to the area, something worth preserving. Restoration will involve specialist care to clean, repair, and protect the statue, allowing it to remain a lasting landmark for the next 100 years.
The fundraising is now complete
Thanks to everyone who has generously contributed to the fundraising, we are delighted to confirm that we have now reached our fundraising target and will have a surplus to help top up the SPRA Garden Fund. Hammersmith and Fulham council have funded half the cost and the remainder has been raised from local contributions. Particular thanks to the generous corporate donors: Architects, Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands and Estate Agents, Horton and Garton and the many kind, individual private donors.
The restoration is now complete.
The roses surrounding the statue have recently been pruned, removed and carefully stored to be replanted in the Spring once the bed has been reconditioned. This cost will come from the SPRA Garden Fund.

We need your ongoing support please
Now the work is finished, the statue will need to be waxed every couple of years. If you are confident up a ladder and happy to get involved, please email support@spraweb.net
We’d love a small team of volunteers.
